Three most famous pop singers are: Michael Jackson/Whitney Houston/Lady Gaga.(My favourite  is probably Michael or Ariana.)

K-POP:

A combo of male and femalepasses vibe, colourful ,has raping in the music, lyrics are often in Korean (Blackpink & BTS also sang in English with most songs) ,different influences ,mostly younger but also for older. this magazine is rock because in the description you can see that it says 'never afraid to push boundaries and have their voices heard' and in the poster you can see that in the main cover line( fight the power) and in the cover lines (revolution) is in bold. You can tell that they managed to get to the target audience because young adults and teens would be quite interested in rock maybe from a few clubs they went to and also the cover looks interesting. The artist also fits the audience because its mostly male age between 15-24 and the artist does look in his early twenties.

The colour palette is white, yellow and black. These colours are very vibrant and attracting to the eye of the audience. The white and black connect with the genre rock and yellow as well.MOJO did this to show the important information and attract people to buy the magazine.

MOJO used a USP of a teen spirit CD for the fans that love that band but also for new people to try that type of genre.it links to the colour palette also the type of magazine it is.

layout, typography, colour palette and shot type is different.

There are three differences between the two magazines.

One difference is the typography used.In the MOJO magazines serif typeface is used to show that its a pop magazine, also to show that its more feminine and for an older audience because its all nice and neat. Whereas in the Kerrang magazine bold sans serif is used to show that its for an younger audience and more masculine, also how the type is capital and bold shows that the genre is hard rock.

The second difference is the layout. In the MOJO magazines its all neat and to the side of the magazine this shows that the target audience might be is more organised and the language is formal as well, it also shows the main image better. However the Kerrang is all over the place and the language used is informal this shows that the target audience is younger than MOJOs and that the target audience are not as organised.

Lastly, the third difference is the shot type.In MOJO magazines is a mid close up shot of a woman this shows that the target audience might be mostly female, also this shows that this is a pop magazine from the lighting on the main image, but also if you look closely at how the female is dressed you could say that it could be also country music magazine. However in Kerrang magazine is a long mid-shot of two male this shows that the target audience is mostly male and also that the genre is hard rock from the way they are dressed i all black, also form the other small images on the cover there is a puff that asks 'how emo are you' so you can clearly see that the audience is between 18-24 years old.

Representation

L/O:To explore the conception of representation in music magazines.

connotation-the unspoken, hidden meaning that gives a word more emotional meaning.

denotation-the exact,literal meaning of a word.

Friday 4th February 2022

Representation

L/O:To explore the concept of representation in music magazine.

hair&clothing:

taylor's hair is neat, pretty. This could suggest that she cares about how she looks for a certain music cover that represents that certain genre. Also her clothing looks feminine and is a bright colour which could mean that the genre is a happy/relaxing music cover. The colour white suggests purity/innocents.

Text:

the typography is scripted since it looks hand written also it isn't a messy scripted typeface its a nice neat font which links with taylor's style and how she's dressed in this cover. Also this shows that she creates her own music and her music is very personal.

setting:

the setting is in a calm forest and which is outside this shows that she's  conflictual and natural, also this could mean that she has creative ideas.

expression &pose:

her expression looks humble.her pose is quite feminine.

text:

some of the text is a bold sans-serif capitals. This suggests the masculinity in the cover. However the other typeface is scripted which could also suggest that he is a song writer.

jewellery:

He has a neckless with a cross which could suggest that he might be religious. Also his jewellery show the genre is rap music.

setting:

the setting looks really gloomy and dark this suggest that his songs have a deeper meaning. This also might suggest that he might be in a gang/underworld.

tattoos :

Having tattoos might represent that he is independent, might also suggest that hes a tough guy/also that he might be ig a gang

hair&cloths:

his clothes shows that he is a tough guy from the bulletproof vest also that you can see his arm muscle but it can also mean that hes very familiar with guns.

foo fighter:

rock,loud,popular,talented,passionate.

rock                                  rock                                  humorous

text is scripted may mean   aggressive                         eccentric

hes a song writer               making fun of the rock        crusade

proud of foo fighters           industry

text:
most of the text is sans-serif.This represents that billie isnt fully feminine but also  a bit of a tomboy. However the masthead is in serif so it also shows that she can also be feminine.

Hair&clothing:
her hair is dyed. which could suggest that she's independent/rebellious.It also fits in with the stereotype of teenagers. She's dressed up in comfy clothing which could represent that she doesn't really care what people think and rather would prefer to live her life to the fullest and have fun rather than care what people think about her.

Friday 11th February 2022

Representation

L/O:To analyse representations used in music magazine.

CONTEXT-Representation reflect the dominance of the celebrity culture in society.

The representation of musicians in the cover is shown by:
The way they shown the idea of society by how this cover is a little bit religious for example the name 'madonna' but also disrespecting religion but having a cross piercing which is a sin.The stereotype of rock is shown by the colour of the magazine and also of the most bold sans-serif typeface, however also feminine form the name 'Madonna' which is serif and how the artist in the magazine is wearing makeup but also that the typeface is similar to the plates in the church .The group which has been represented is street punk and pop majesty and immortal also this shows that people look up to her as an artist. The message that is trying to be sent is that she was very popular in rock and that madonna has changed her genre to pop which shocked a lot of people,However the social issue is drugs and this could be linked with rock music because they normally sing  about the social issues and sometimes involves drugs/drug dealers. Representation reflect the dominance of the celebrity culture in society. She is also rebellious because that she is.music that might be like drugs since people get addicted to it which means that the artist are the drug dealers.

Music videos
L/O:To explore this section of the unit and research chosen case studies.

case 2-'uptown funk' by Mark Ronson and featuring Bruno mars
genre- funk/pop
date was released-11 January 2015
the song is about it's about being a teenager maybe because they are having fun and go to clubs but also about how you act and how you behave and look.
in the video they mostly are having fun and singing, also its about performance.
who features in the video- bruno mars
google the lyrics :)

case 2-'if i were a boy' by Beyonce
genre-R&B/Soul, Gospel, Dance/Electronic, Pop, UK R&B, Seasonal, House, Techno, Christian
date it was released-8 October 2008
the song is about how life is easier to be a boy rather than a girl and how different the viewpoint of the world is.
in the video she is acting on how different the viewpoint of the world by narrating/lip-syncing a story of 'if she was a boy' rather than a girl and how easy the world is without being criticised most of the time.its about how men treat woman unfairly.
google the lyrics :)

different type of music videos.
performance and narrative.

in Bayonce's narrative video she is basically showing the double standerds that men can treat woman unfairly but not woman treating men unfairly. At the start of the mv she shows how men treat woman throughout the day and then near the end she goes back to reality and shows how their relationship is.

in the uptown funk mv its a performance because they defiantly use lip-syncing, near the end they do live performance to a crowd in the club. The main focus is on the band and they preform to the camera.

in if i were a boy mv its a narrative because the video tells a story and is  filmed and edited like a movie( black and white)The story matches the lyrics.

Friday 8th April 2022
L/O:To examine the use of media language in music videos.
   costume,colours,lighting...                     connotation
costume:bright&colourful, retro style - matches pop conventions wealth &status;80s
colour & lighting:high key lighting&saturated colour -matches pop conventions happy up beat vibe.
setting:streets,urban - local/community feel ;city living
props:classic US car;sunglasses;shoe shining -stylish,cool; light-hearted,comedy tone.

The video overall of uptown funk has a up beat tone because of how they are dressed all fairly formal and in bright colours which makes them stand out from the crowd and their actions in the music video is comedy based. The setting is darker saturated colours which makes them stand out from the crowd also makes them look different.Thats how the mise-en-scene is presented in uptown funk.
I think the most important mise-en-scene that stands out is blocking and bright costumes.Blocking is because bruno mars is always positioned in the middle also he is the only one wearing pink which highlights him as the star power. Also when the whole group dances at the choreography they always follow bruno mars lead.

misogyny=double standards

The video is in monochrome because the Beyonce director doesn't want the viewer to get distracted by the bright colours, dances and also to show how serious the topic of misogyny used in the music video.Low key lighting is being used in one scene to create highlights and shadows on her face to show that she might be hiding something/two faced.
low key lighting is used on Beyonce's character when her colleague at a party.By using low key lighting here Beyonce's face is half covered with shadow. The shadow could suggest the inequality of genders or that that's not the real her.

In this part of the video Beyonce shows direct address. Here the lighting style has changed from low key to high key lighting.

When Beyonce is going to work she wears a office uniform. It tells us that she might be working something important since its an office uniform. This shows us the stereotype of what woman wear. Also this happens when everything goes back to 'reality'.

Exam syle question
P-The music videos for Bruno Mars' uptown funk  Beyonce's if i were a boy have a very contrasting use of lighting and colour.

E- for example vibrant lighting is being used in uptown funk however in Bayonne's music video low key or high key.In uptown funk has vibrant colours whereas in Beyonce's is monochrome.

E- The styles contrast because in uptown funk is up beat and comedy like and its meant to be a happy/fun music video also its colourful;Whereas in Beyonce's video is narrative music video that tells a serious misogyny about how different females and males treat each other and its monochrome cause of that.

Friday 6th may 2022
sounds and editing
L/O:To explore how sound &editing are used to create meaning in music videos.

sound
diegetic sounds- can be heard by the actor/people on set (not edited)
non-diegetic sounds-cant be heard by the actor/people on set (edited)

if i were a boy diegetic sounds
-start dialogue static background noise
-car door and coming out of the front door to add realism to the narrative
-sirens
-traffic
-gunshots
-dialogue and background noise to add realism but also it switches with a distorted static sound (which is non-diegetic)

uptown funk is a non-diegetic because its a performance video not a narrative video which means they don't need diegetic sounds to support a narrative since there isn't any.

editing
-order of shots/shot choices
-continuity
-transitions
-shots duration
-pace and rhythm
-special effects

linear editing- chronological order, makes time(beginning-middle-end)
non-linear- out of order editing no clear direction of time

pace

uptown funk is a fast song= quicker pace
if i were a boy slower song =slower pace

uptown funk is edited in a non-linear order because we are not sure of the order of the shots in the mv and just assume they are in order also this is a performance mv, however in IIWAB its edited in linear order because we can see exactly the order from the mv also IIWAB it's a narrative mv and needs to be linear.

media language -camerawork,editing,mise-en-sence,sound

editing-monochrome and colourful
mise-en-scene- camerawork- mostly mid-shot and the other one is long shots
sound-background noise and realism

One way the music videos use media language to differ from each other is editing.Uptown funk has saturated colours where as IIWAB is edited was in monochrome to show that IIWAB is a narrative mv whereas uptown funk is a performing mv.The effect of this is that one you are focused on the colours and it looks fun how a performing mv is whereas the effect on IIWAB is that you cant be distracted by the colours since its monochrome plus it makes you focus more on the story/narrative and not the colours.

Friday 13th May 2022
Representation
L/O:To explore how representations are constructed in music videos.

notes for representation for the (uptown funk )

-sexualises woman same as in the 18s.
-males seem more powerful cause of the shots and chains.
-groups are dressed the same to show the bond between them
-different contrast of the background and how the group is dressed.
-woman's are objectified in the video
-reversing  the racist conventions of the shoe shining
-male stereotype of how important they are
- subvert ethnic stereotypes

men
important, rich, sexually objectifying the woman by how they are looking at them,

woman
sexually objectified (shown just the body),

ethnicity
good friendship,no crimes

bruno mars

Friday 20th May 2022
Representation
L/O:To explain how representations are constructed in music videos.

it supports gender stereotypes because its showing all the stereotypes of gender by her at the end and how a males are however it also it subverts because she can be a masculine female and a more feminine male and also how she's a police woman and how that is a more male kind role.

the shot is a mid shot ,the shot is focused on her chest and this sexually objectifies females.

Uptown funk has sexually objectification on females cause most shots are showing their body and not at all faces and also mostly fits the female roles (hair salon, heals, colourful cloths and revealing)

In if i were a boy it both does and doesn't since in some shots its sexually objectifies her and in some it doesn't and sometimes it follows the female roles.

how does if i were a boy music video present gender?

in IIWAB gender is represented as a mixture of both as in some shots the traditional stereotypes are followed however in some cases it shows that she's in control rather than males and in some shots it shows that she is following the female roles as she's submissive at the end and how before the switch its like everything was a dream and after the switch is how society view a relationship and genders.

Radio industry and audiences
L/O:To explore the industry and audience behind the live lounge.

in the uk public service broadcasting is used for the benefit of the people rather than the money for the company.
1)there are 5 national radio stations that the BBC operate.
-Music radio (on Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra, Radio 2, 6 Music and Asian Network.)
-Speech, drama, analysis and the arts (on Radio 4.)
  • -Classical music and jazz (on Radio 3.)
  • -News and sport (on 5 live and 5 live sports extra.)
  • -Local programming from 40 stations in England.
they are different because they have different target audience, also they have a different subject.
2)there are 40 regional radio stations that BBC operates.
3)BBC is funded by the licence fee paid by UK households

BBC Radio 1:remit

when you go on the BBC website it already shows you like the music plus it shows the music. This would attract younger audience because of the colours also it might be a genre that they might now also this is also the radio so the older target audience will be attracted into it. The colour scheme is quite dull (black and white) however there is some vibrant colours that pop out (e.g. white and orange). The logo is also repeated which shows the younger audience.
In addition, the bright colours that appear when you got on the music page of the BBC website shows that its targeted at younger audiences also the artists are first shown which most people will recognise mostly the younger audiences. also it mentions the weekend which also shows the younger audience because they would be free for the weekend since no school where as the older ones might work on the weekends.

basically political decision makers thinking that the music the younger audiences listen to isn't important.

The wider audience is protected when listening to radio 1 by giving a warning before hand for the parents to turn off the radio to protect the younger children.

Exam Format
L/O:To understand exam style questions and practice exam techniques.

The live lounge fits to the BBC remit through to inform, educate and entertain all at the same time by live aspects adds anticipation and excitement.( each episode includes interviews and  live performances of a range of different types of singers and genre.
Adding onto that, the target audience for the live lounge is 15-29 year olds since they would have similar yet so different types of music they like. Have young, dynamic presenters with informal speech to appeal more to the audience and for them to understand them better. An example of this is by the slangs that are normally used (e.g. 'sick' and 'big up proper good') for that informal speech.
It also offers a range of new music that plays a mixture of mainstream and new artist however this also adds to supporting emerging artists that play a mixture of mainstream and new artists. An example of these are Stormzy mainstream but not as commercial genre (grime). But he did play Beyonce 'brown skinned girl'
.  This is an example of supporting emerging artists, Holly Humberstone and stormzy a dream to play live lounge.
Live lounge is known for providing a mix of music and speech and interviewing  guests in between songs. A great example is Holly and knowing stories about her moving to London and how that went and also her everyday life in London ,diary and sister stories that we also discovered as well.
