Mise-en-Scene

Friday 5th March 2021

L/O: To explore the use of mise-en-scene in films.

The person into music and a bit of reading from the books on the shelf. Also he has some posters of people so maybe he's a fan of them. That person might still be in school/university because of the notebooks on the floor.

Mise-en-scene is made up of 5 areas:#

  1. Setting & Props
  2. Costume, hair & make up
  3. Facial expressions & Body language
  4. lighting & colour
  5. Positioning of characters/ objects within the frame.

 Setting & Props

-Settings & Locations play an important part in film-making and are not just 'bakgrounds'.

task: What settings, locations and props would you expect to find in:

1.A science film-in a lab,a bit in the future,science stuff and technology.

2.A romance comedy- on a beach,present & future, ring.

3.A horror film-old houses/forest,in past,fake blood, dolls,costumes.

Costume,Hair & Make up

-Costume,Hair & Make up act as an instant indicator to us of a characters personality, status & job.

-It tells us immediatly whetever the film is set in the present and what society/ or culture it will centre around.

Facial expressions &body language

-Facial expressions provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling.

-if someone is smiling broadly,we assume they are happy but we may get a different feeling if this is accompanied by a scary music.

Lighting & colour

LOW KEY LIGHTING

-Produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas

-Deep,distinct shadows/silhouettes are formed

HIGH KEY LIGHTING

-Lighting is natural and realistic to our eyes

-Produces brightly lit sets or sunny day

Task: What does the lighting & colour suggest about this scene?

-in the past

-dark room

-old house

Position of people/objects

-positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/ object

-A film-maker can use positioning to indicade relationships between people

put it all together

-in past

-food, guns with sabby thing at the end

-royal guard costume and a pirat costume

-two serious guards and one ready to escape pirat

-the two guards are garding jack not to escape and jack is in the middle of them two with both his hands up .

Comments

  1. yey - you got it to work!
There are some good ideas, but try to explain what the mise-en-scene tells us and HOW it does this. For example, in the last image, how do we know he is a pirate? What does it tell us about the time period it is set in? How about the room he is in - what sort of a place is it and how do we know?
DIRT: add detail to the final analysis
